Equipment for online radio
Start with the minimum and improve bit by bit: what to buy first and what can wait.

You don't need a studio to do online radio. Start with the basics and expand when you need to.
Level 1: the minimum to get started
- Computer with a stable connection (cable is best).
- USB microphone condenser or dynamic: it plugs in directly and needs no other equipment. Dynamic mics pick up less room noise.
- Closed-back headphones so the speaker sound doesn't feed back into the microphone.
- Broadcasting software: BUTT (free).
Level 2: several mics and live music
- USB audio interface or mixer with 2–4 channels for guests.
- XLR dynamic microphones and stands or boom arms.
- Mixxx (free) if you'll DJ live: mix and broadcast at the same time.
- Pop filter and some absorption in the room (curtains, rugs, panels).
Level 3: studio
- Mixer with processing (compressor, noise gate, equaliser).
- Voice processor or dynamics plugins.
- Acoustic treatment of the room.
Useful free software
- BUTT: broadcast your voice or your mixer.
- Mixxx: DJ software that broadcasts live.
- Audacity: record and edit jingles, ads and shows.
Sound tips
- Speak about a hand's width from the mic and always at the same distance.
- Do a test before each show and listen to it on headphones.
- Avoid empty rooms with echo: a bedroom with furniture sounds better than an open-plan living room.
